Chapter 1 — Arjuna Vishada Yoga

arjunaviṣādayoga

Stationed between the two vast armies on the holy battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna is overwhelmed by profound sorrow and delusion upon seeing his beloved teachers, elders, and kinsmen. Overcome with grief, he casts away his bow and arrows, refusing to fight.

Verse 1

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | dharmakṣetre kurukṣetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ | māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva kimakurvata sañjaya || १-१ ||

Translation (English):Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjaya, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do, when they gathered on the sacred field of Kurukshetra, eager for battle?

Verse 2

sañjaya uvāca | dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṃ vyūḍhaṃ duryodhanastadā | ācāryamupasaṅgamya rājā vacanamabravīt || १-२ ||

Translation (English):Sanjaya said: O King, after looking over the army arranged in military formation by the sons of Pandu, King Duryodhana went to his teacher and spoke the following words.

Verse 3

paśyaitāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmācārya mahatīṃ camūm | vyūḍhāṃ drupadaputreṇa tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā || १-३ ||

Translation (English):O my teacher, behold the great army of the sons of Pandu, so expertly arranged by your intelligent disciple the son of Drupada.

Verse 4

atra śūrā maheṣvāsā bhīmārjunasamā yudhi | yuyudhāno virāṭaśca drupadaśca mahārathaḥ || १-४ ||

Translation (English):Here in this army are many heroic bowmen equal in fighting to Bhima and Arjuna: great fighters like Yuyudhana, Virata and Drupada.

Verse 5

dhṛṣṭaketuścekitānaḥ kāśirājaśca vīryavān | purujitkuntibhojaśca śaibyaśca narapuṅgavaḥ || १-५ ||

Translation (English):There are also great, heroic, powerful fighters like Dhrishtaketu, Chekitana, Kashiraja, Purujit, Kuntibhoja and Shaibya.

Verse 6

yudhāmanyuśca vikrānta uttamaujāśca vīryavān | saubhadro draupadeyāśca sarva eva mahārathāḥ || १-६ ||

Translation (English):There are the mighty Yudhamanyu, the very powerful Uttamauja, the son of Subhadra and the sons of Draupadi, all of whom are great chariot fighters.

Verse 7

asmākaṃ tu viśiṣṭā ye tānnibodha dvijottama | nāyakā mama sainyasya saṃjñārthaṃ tānbravīmi te || १-७ ||

Translation (English):But for your information, O best of the brahmanas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.

Verse 8

bhavānbhīṣmaśca karṇaśca kṛpaśca samitiñjayaḥ | aśvatthāmā vikarṇaśca saumadattistathaiva ca || १-८ ||

Translation (English):There are personalities like you, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, Ashvatthama, Vikarna and the son of Somadatta called Bhurisrava, who are always victorious in battle.

Verse 9

anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ | nānāśastrapraharaṇāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ || १-९ ||

Translation (English):There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.

Verse 10

aparyāptaṃ tadasmākaṃ balaṃ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam | paryāptaṃ tvidameteṣāṃ balaṃ bhīmābhirakṣitam || १-१० ||

Translation (English):Our strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhishma, whereas the strength of the Pandavas, carefully protected by Bhima, is limited.

Verse 11

ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu yathābhāgamavasthitāḥ | bhīṣmamevābhirakṣantu bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi || १-११ ||

Translation (English):Therefore, I pray that all of you, situated at your respective strategic points in the phalanx of the army, must give full support to Grandfather Bhishma.

Verse 12

tasya sañjanayanharṣaṃ kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ | siṃhanādaṃ vinadyoccaiḥ śaṅkhaṃ dadhmau pratāpavān || १-१२ ||

Translation (English):Then Bhishma, the great valiant grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, the grandfather of the fighters, blew his conchshell very loudly, making a sound like the roar of a lion, giving Duryodhana joy.

Verse 13

tataḥ śaṅkhāśca bheryaśca paṇavānakagomukhāḥ | sahasaivābhyahanyanta sa śabdastumulo'bhavat || १-१३ ||

Translation (English):After that, the conchshells, drums, bugles, trumpets and horns were all suddenly sounded, and the combined sound was tumultuous.

Verse 14

tataḥ śvetairhayairyukte mahati syandane sthitau | mādhavaḥ pāṇḍavaścaiva divyau śaṅkhau pradadhmatuḥ || १-१४ ||

Translation (English):On the other side, both Lord Krishna and Arjuna, stationed on a great chariot drawn by white horses, sounded their transcendental conchshells.

Verse 15

pāñcajanyaṃ hṛṣīkeśo devadattaṃ dhanañjayaḥ | pauṇḍraṃ dadhmau mahāśaṅkhaṃ bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ || १-१५ ||

Translation (English):Lord Krishna blew His conchshell, called Pancajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhima, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell, called Paundra.

Verse 16

anantavijayaṃ rājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | nakulaḥ sahadevaśca sughoṣamaṇipuṣpakau || १-१६ ||

Translation (English):King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, blew his conchshell, the Anantavijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva blew the Sughosha and Manipushpaka.

Verse 17

kāśyaśca parameṣvāsaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ | dhṛṣṭadyumno virāṭaśca sātyakiścāparājitaḥ || १-१७ ||

Translation (English):That great archer the King of Kashi, the great fighter Shikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna, Virata, the unconquerable Satyaki...

Verse 18

drupado draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ pṛthivīpate | saubhadraśca mahābāhuḥ śaṅkhāndadhmuḥ pṛthakpṛthak || १-१८ ||

Translation (English):...Drupada, the sons of Draupadi, and the others, O King, such as the mighty-armed son of Subhadra, all blew their respective conchshells.

Verse 19

sa ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ hṛdayāni vyadārayat | nabhaśca pṛthivīṃ caiva tumulo vyanunādayan || १-१९ ||

Translation (English):The blowing of these different conchshells became uproarious. Vibrating both in the sky and on the earth, it shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra.

Verse 20

atha vyavasthitāndṛṣṭvā dhārtarāṣṭrān kapidhvajaḥ | pravṛtte śastrasampāte dhanurudyamya pāṇḍavaḥ | hṛṣīkeśaṃ tadā vākyamidamāha mahīpate || १-२० ||

Translation (English):At that time Arjuna, the son of Pandu, seated in the chariot bearing the flag marked with Hanuman, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows. O King, after looking at the sons of Dhritarashtra drawn in military array, Arjuna then spoke to Lord Krishna these words.

Verse 21

arjuna uvāca | senayorubhayormadhye rathaṃ sthāpaya me'cyuta || १-२१ ||

Translation (English):Arjuna said: O infallible one, please draw my chariot between the two armies.

Verse 22

yāvadetānnirīkṣe'haṃ yoddhukāmānavasthitān | kairmayā saha yoddhavyamasmin raṇasamudyame || १-२२ ||

Translation (English):So that I may see those present here, who desire to fight, and with whom I must contend in this great trial of arms.

Verse 23

yotsyamānānavekṣe'haṃ ya ete'tra samāgatāḥ | dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddheryuddhe priyacikīrṣavaḥ || १-२३ ||

Translation (English):Let me see those who have come here to fight, wishing to please the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra.

Verse 24

sañjaya uvāca | evamukto hṛṣīkeśo guḍākeśena bhārata | senayorubhayormadhye sthāpayitvā rathottamam || १-२४ ||

Translation (English):Sanjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, having thus been addressed by Arjuna, Lord Krishna drew up the fine chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties.

Verse 25

bhīṣmadroṇapramukhataḥ sarveṣāṃ ca mahīkṣitām | uvāca pārtha paśyaitānsamavetānkurūniti || १-२५ ||

Translation (English):In the presence of Bhishma, Drona and all the other chieftains of the world, the Lord said, Just behold, Partha, all the Kurus assembled here.

Verse 26

tatrāpaśyatsthitānpārthaḥ pitṝnatha pitāmahān | ācāryānmātulānbhrātṝnputrānpautrānsakhīṃstathā || १-२६ ||

Translation (English):There Arjuna could see, within the midst of the armies of both parties, his fathers, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends...

Verse 27

śvaśurānsuhṛdaścaiva senayorubhayorapi | tānsamīkṣya sa kaunteyaḥ sarvānbandhūnavasthitān || १-२७ ||

Translation (English):...and also his fathers-in-law and well-wishers. When the son of Kunti, Arjuna, saw all these relatives and friends standing there,

Verse 28

kṛpayā parayāviṣṭo viṣīdannidamabravīt | arjuna uvāca | dṛṣṭvemaṃ svajanaṃ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṃ samupasthitam || १-२८ ||

Translation (English):...he became overwhelmed with compassion and spoke thus. Arjuna said: My dear Krishna, seeing my friends and relatives present before me in such a fighting spirit,

Verse 29

sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṃ ca pariśuṣyati | vepathuśca śarīre me romaharṣaśca jāyate || १-२९ ||

Translation (English):I feel my limbs quivering and my mouth drying up. My whole body is trembling, and my hair is standing on end.

Verse 30

gāṇḍīvaṃ sraṃsate hastāttvakcaiva paridahyate | na ca śaknomyavasthātuṃ bhramatīva ca me manaḥ || १-३० ||

Translation (English):My bow Gandiva is slipping from my hand, and my skin is burning. I am now unable to stand any longer. I am forgetting myself, and my mind is reeling.

Verse 31

nimittāni ca paśyāmi viparītāni keśava | na ca śreyo'nupaśyāmi hatvā svajanamāhave || १-३१ ||

Translation (English):I see only causes of misfortune, O Krishna, killer of the Keshi demon. I do not see how any good can come from killing my own kinsmen in this battle.

Verse 32

na kāṅkṣe vijayaṃ kṛṣṇa na ca rājyaṃ sukhāni ca | kiṃ no rājyena govinda kiṃ bhogairjīvitena vā || १-३२ ||

Translation (English):O Krishna, I do not desire victory, kingdom, or happiness. Of what use to us is a kingdom, happiness, or even life itself, O Govinda?

Verse 33

yeṣāmarthe kāṅkṣitaṃ no rājyaṃ bhogāḥ sukhāni ca | ta ime'vasthitā yuddhe prāṇāṃstyaktvā dhanāni ca || १-३३ ||

Translation (English):O Govinda, of what avail is a kingdom, happiness or even life itself when all those for whom we may desire them are now arrayed on this battlefield...

Verse 34

ācāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrāstathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ | mātulāḥ śvaśurāḥ pautrāḥ śyālāḥ sambandhinastathā || १-३४ ||

Translation (English):...teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and other relatives.

Verse 35

etānna hantumicchāmi ghnato'pi madhusūdana | api trailokyarājyasya hetoḥ kiṃ nu mahīkṛte || १-३५ ||

Translation (English):O Madhusudana, I do not wish to kill them, even though they might otherwise kill me, not even for the sake of the three worlds, let alone this earth.

Verse 36

nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrānnaḥ kā prītiḥ syājjanārdana | pāpamevāśrayedasmānhatvaitānātatāyinaḥ || १-३६ ||

Translation (English):O Janardana, what pleasure will we derive from killing the sons of Dhritarashtra? Sin will surely overtake us if we kill these aggressors.

Verse 37

tasmānnārhā vayaṃ hantuṃ dhārtarāṣṭrānsvabāndhavān | svajanaṃ hi kathaṃ hatvā sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava || १-३७ ||

Translation (English):Therefore it is not proper for us to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra, our relatives. O Madhava, how can we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?

Verse 38

yadyapyete na paśyanti lobhopahatacetasaḥ | kulakṣayakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ mitradrohe ca pātakam || १-३८ ||

Translation (English):O Janardana, although these men, their hearts overtaken by greed, see no fault in destroying one's family or quarreling with friends...

Verse 39

kathaṃ na jñeyamasmābhiḥ pāpādasmānnivartitum | kulakṣayakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ prapaśyadbhirjanārdana || १-३९ ||

Translation (English):...why should we, who can see the crime in destroying a family, engage in these acts of sin?

Verse 40

kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ | dharme naṣṭe kulaṃ kṛtsnamadharmo'bhibhavatyuta || १-४० ||

Translation (English):With the destruction of dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligion.

Verse 41

adharmābhibhavātkṛṣṇa praduṣyanti kulastriyaḥ | strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya jāyate varṇasaṅkaraḥ || १-४१ ||

Translation (English):O Krishna, when irreligion is prominent in the family, the women of the family become polluted, and from the degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vrishni, comes unwanted progeny.

Verse 42

saṅkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṃ kulasya ca | patanti pitaro hyeṣāṃ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ || १-४२ ||

Translation (English):An increase of unwanted population certainly causes hellish life both for the family and for those who destroy the family tradition. The ancestors of such corrupt families fall down, because the performances for offering them food and water are entirely stopped.

Verse 43

doṣairetaiḥ kulaghnānāṃ varṇasaṅkarakārakaiḥ | utsādyante jātidharmāḥ kuladharmāśca śāśvatāḥ || १-४३ ||

Translation (English):By the evil deeds of those who destroy the family tradition and thus give rise to unwanted children, all kinds of community projects and family welfare activities are devastated.

Verse 44

utsannakuladharmāṇāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ janārdana | narake niyataṃ vāso bhavatītyanuśuśruma || १-४४ ||

Translation (English):O Krishna, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those whose family traditions are destroyed dwell always in hell.

Verse 45

aho bata mahatpāpaṃ kartuṃ vyavasitā vayam | yadrājyasukhalobhena hantuṃ svajanamudyatāḥ || १-४५ ||

Translation (English):Alas, how strange it is that we are preparing to commit greatly sinful acts. Driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness, we are intent on killing our own kinsmen.

Verse 46

yadi māmapratīkāramaśastraṃ śastrapāṇayaḥ | dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyustanme kṣemataraṃ bhavet || १-४६ ||

Translation (English):Better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield.

Verse 47

sañjaya uvāca evamuktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye rathopastha upāviśat | visṛjya saśaraṃ cāpaṃ śokasaṃvignamānasaḥ ||

Translation (English):Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna, with his mind overwhelmed by sorrow, cast aside his bow along with arrows and sat down in the chariot.
